Financial Assistance Possibilities for Students in the UIC Graduate Program in Geography

The department offers limited numbers of teaching and research assistantships as funds are available and need dictates. Particluarly outstanding applicants may be nominated by the department for Graduate College fellowships. In addition, the program is regularly allocated a tuition and fee waiver by the Graduate College. Finally, a small number of scholarships, with some set aside for minority students, are offered by the Graduate College. Information for those should be obtained directly from the Graduate College.

Financial assistance, when awarded by the department, requires competitive evaluation by the faculty and generally is given on a term-by-term basis. Applicants requesting financial aid must either indicate that they hold U.S. citizenship or be able to demonstrate to the University proper Immingration and Naturalization Service status before consideration will be given to such requests. The availability of teaching assistantships is driven by instructional needs, which vary from one semester to the next depending on course-scheduling patterns. In addition, depending on faculty research support and students' demonstrated abilities to perform required tasks, there occasionally are openings for research assistants. The availability of research assistantships depends mainly on varying levels of funding received by the University from external sources. In either case, once awarded, continuation of support also hinges on results from periodic job-performance reviews.
